INTECH 2 Social Studies

PROGRAM TITLE: INTECH 2 Social Studies

PROGRAM LENGTH: 29 Contact Hours

Program Description
The GIS K-12 Initiative will introduce K-12 students and teachers to the world of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and will involve them in an authentic and powerful application of the GIS technology. The GIS K-12 Initiative will cross multiple LCET initiatives, including Making Connections and INTECH 2 Social Studies.

During the first year, a minimum of one teacher and one class in every K-12 state-approved school will participate in a statewide social studies lesson and project. The project will provide needed GIS data to the Department of Transportation and Development and will serve the safety needs of every parish in the state. Teachers and schools will receive model lessons for the project, needed software, and a GIS Starter Kit.

Key Components/Activities of the Program:
1. Sample Making Connections lesson that incorporate GIS technology (one at the elementary level, middle school level, and high school level)
2. GIS Starter Kit that contains GeoMedia software, Resources for the Classroom, GeoData for Schools, and posters provided by InterGraph corporation
3. GPS instrumentation on loan from <source to be determined>

The training is based on the five critical components of LA INTECH therefore only individuals who have successfully completed a Louisiana INTECH course will be eligible to apply. A portfolio, three individual lessons plans, and one group lesson will be used as evidence of the completion of INTECH.

  A participant who is selected to participate on an INTECH 2 Social Studies agrees to:

·        Attend ALL 3 1/2 training sessions (Hours are from 8:00 a.m.– 4::00 p.m. for days 1-3 and 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. for day 4.)

·        Critically examine their own instructional practices to determine how technology can play a role in enhancing the teaching and learning process.

·        Implement technology projects and activities dev eloped during the training program and during the school year.
